Video abstracts as a scientific communication tool: Miguel Ferreira (CFE/TERRA) featured in 90 Segundos de Ciência

Miguel Ferreira, researcher at the Centre for Functional Ecology (CFE) and member of the TERRA Associate Laboratory, participated in episode 2107 of the program 90 Segundos de Ciência (90 Seconds of Science), in which he spoke about the role of video abstracts in scientific communication and dissemination.

According to the researcher, video abstracts “offer many advantages, starting with the fact that they increase the impact of scientific output. They are useful for deconstructing complex phenomena that are sometimes very difficult to describe and explain, and can also be used as an educational tool.”

On 90 Segundos de Ciência (90 Seconds of Science), the CFE and TERRA researcher explained that, as part of his doctoral project, he worked with video abstracts applied to the fields of ecology and the environment, structuring his work into three main phases:

1. Inventory and categorization of existing video abstracts, with the aim of mapping the state of the art in this area.
2. Consultation with a panel of experts to identify the most valued elements in the production of an effective video abstract.
3. Application in a school context, involving secondary school teachers and students to explore the educational potential of this tool.

During the project, two original video abstracts were produced, based on scientific research carried out at CFE. From this experience, Miguel Ferreira (CFE/TERRA) concluded that an effective video abstract “should be short, should have real images and small animations to describe more complex processes, should have good sound, and should be narrated.”

The researcher also emphasizes that this tool can be used “to reach new audiences and should be produced in a collaborative and multidisciplinary manner.”
