The TERRA Associate Laboratory Launches a New Infographic “Aquaculture and Fisheries Resources”
This new infographic was developed by researchers Ivan Viegas and Filipe Martinho from the Centre for Functional Ecology (CFE), based on the most recent data published by the FAO in the report The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2024 – Blue Transformation in Action.
The exploitation of aquatic resources requires sustainable management, especially in light of the global population growth, which has surpassed 8 billion people, and the climate changes affecting marine and freshwater ecosystems. At a time when the production of fish, shellfish, seaweeds, and aquatic plants plays a crucial role in global food security and socio-economic development, it is essential to understand that the Fisheries sector directly employs 61.8 million people, with aquaculture accounting for 36% of that total. In 2022, the total production of fish and algae reached 223.2 million tons, with aquaculture surpassing fisheries in total production (51%).
The fisheries sector continues to be an essential source of livelihood and employment for millions of people, with aquaculture assuming an increasingly prominent role. The production destined for human consumption represents the vast majority of the total extracted from oceans and cultivation systems, reinforcing the importance of this sector in the global diet. Some of the most captured species include fish of high commercial value and popular consumption. Regarding aquaculture, production is led by the Asian continent, with other regions of the world progressively expanding their activities. Fish are the primary organisms cultivated, followed by mollusks and crustaceans, reflecting the diversity and economic significance of this sector.
