“The Hidden Life of Fungi”: CFE/TERRA researcher featured on the Biosfera program
Susana C. Gonçalves, a researcher at CFE/TERRA, explains in the Biosfera program why fungi are the invisible pillars of life on Earth and how their conservation is critical for ecosystem balance.
In the latest episode of the Biosfera program (RTP), titled “The Hidden Life of Fungi,” Susana C. Gonçalves, coordinator of the MyCoLab at CFE and a member of the TERRA Associated Laboratory, highlighted the vital role fungi play in sustaining life on our planet.
Fungi constitute a unique and fascinating kingdom, often invisible, yet serving an irreplaceable ecological function. During her appearance, the CFE/TERRA researcher shared that it is estimated the Fungi kingdom harbors around 2.5 million species, but less than 10% of this vast biodiversity is known to us.
Despite their critical importance, the fungal kingdom remains underrepresented in global nature conservation efforts. According to Susana C. Gonçalves, recognition of the ecological relevance of fungi took a significant leap in 1969, with the official acknowledgment of the Kingdom Fungi.
For the CFE/TERRA researcher, fungi are “essential to life on Earth,” and she emphasized the need to view these organisms as a key piece for the future, especially in the face of climate challenges and biodiversity loss.
