TERRA researchers participate in leading European meeting on freshwater ecosystems
TERRA was present at SEFS14, with Professor Teresa Ferreira as Keynote Speaker, reinforcing the role of Portuguese research in European scientific leadership.
Between July 21 and 25, the 14th Symposium on European Freshwater Sciences (SEFS14) was held in Bolu, Turkey. This is the main forum for European researchers in the field of continental aquatic sciences, both in fundamental and applied areas.
The meeting brought together researchers from around the world to discuss the ecological, scientific, and social challenges affecting freshwater ecosystems. The TERRA Associate Laboratory was represented by researchers from the Forest Research Centre (CEF) Teresa Ferreira, Paulo Branco, Gonçalo Duarte, and Leonor Santos.
Professor Teresa Ferreira was the keynote speaker, presenting “Restoration Needs and Challenges in European Rivers: A Bird’s-Eye Perspective” where she gave a comprehensive overview of the evolution and current state of the ecological quality of rivers in Europe, also addressing emerging trends and proposals for debate.
Professor Teresa Ferreira, who is also Chair of the TERRA Coordinators’ Council, believes that “SEFS is the main forum for European researchers in the field of continental aquatic sciences, both fundamental and applied, and has been particularly relevant at a time of critical change, marked by the need to implement transformative processes involving the whole of society — an essential condition for reversing current trends of degradation.”
Scientists Paulo Branco, Gonçalo Duarte, and Leonor Santos also participated as speakers, presenting their research work in thematic sessions.
Participation in SEFS14 reinforces TERRA’s commitment to scientific research excellence and the promotion of sustainable solutions for aquatic systems, in a context of increasing environmental and climate pressure.
