Researchers from LEAF presented the YUM Algae project at the final event of the Blue Growth Programme of the EEA Grants
On March 19, 2025, the Cultural Center of Belém in Lisbon hosted the final event of the Blue Growth Programme of the EEA Grants, an initiative aimed at promoting innovation and sustainability in the blue economy sector in Portugal. The event brought together various experts, researchers, and representatives from public and private entities, providing a platform for the exchange of knowledge, results, and best practices related to the sustainable development of marine resources.
Among the highlighted projects was YUM Algae, an innovative initiative developed by LEAF – Linking Landscape, Environment, Agriculture and Food, which explores the potential of algae in sustainable food production. The project involved several researchers from the Associate Laboratory TERRA, including Anabela Raymundo, Catarina Prista, Isabel Sousa, Joana Costa, and Cristiana Nunes, who presented the advancements and scientific contributions of this research towards a more sustainable and healthy future.
The main goal of YUM Algae is to promote the use of algae as a source of protein and other essential nutrients in human nutrition, fostering dietary diversification and the valorization of endogenous marine resources. The LEAF team has been conducting in-depth studies on the application of algae in gastronomy and the food industry, aiming to create innovative and healthy products that meet current nutritional and environmental requirements.
During the event, the researchers emphasized the importance of the blue economy for sustainable development and the need to integrate science- and technology-based solutions for the valorization of marine resources. The YUM Algae project exemplifies this approach, demonstrating how scientific research can contribute to new opportunities in the food sector, reducing ecological footprints and promoting more sustainable practices.
In addition to presenting the project, LEAF’s participation in the event provided an opportunity to establish important connections with other researchers and entities in the sector, fostering potential future collaborations in the blue economy.
