New Earthworm Species Named in Honor of Researcher Luís Cunha
A new earthworm species, Fimoscolex cunhai, has been described in the Itatiaia National Park (Rio de Janeiro) by Brazilian specialists and named in honor of researcher Luís Cunha from the Environmental Ecology and Ecotoxicology Group at the Centre for Functional Ecology (CFE). This recognition was recently published in the Zootaxa article New earthworm species of Glossoscolex leuckart, 1835 and Fimoscolex Michaelsen, 1900 (Clitellata: glossoscolecidae) from southeastern Brazil.
The article describes ten new species of earthworms (Crassiclitellata: glossoscolecidae) discovered in the mountains of southeastern Brazil, spanning the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais.
Two of these species belong to the Glossoscolex genus, and one of the researchers involved in the description of these earthworms is Marie Bartz from the Centre for Functional Ecology (CFE) and the TERRA Laboratory. The remaining eight species belong to the Fimoscolex genus, including Fimoscolex cunhai, which was named after Luís Cunha in recognition of his significant contributions to this field.
