CEF co-organizes international conference on cork science, forestry, and sustainability
Researchers from 12 countries gathered in Lisbon to discuss innovation, sustainability, and new applications for cork at an event organized by CEF in partnership with the University of Aveiro and with the support of the Rectorate of the University of Lisbon.
The Forest Research Centre (CEF), a research unit of the TERRA Associate Laboratory, organized the international conference Cork Science and Applications 2025, in partnership with the University of Aveiro and with the support of the Rectorate of the University of Lisbon.
The event took place over two days and brought together around 100 participants from 12 countries for a meeting dedicated to research, innovation, and sustainability in the cork and forest ecosystems sector.
With an intense and multidisciplinary program, the conference featured interviews, round tables, and scientific presentations that addressed emerging and strategic issues for the future of cork and forests, such as the development of new cork-based applications and materials, circular bioeconomy models associated with this natural resource, the challenges posed by climate change to the sustainability of forest ecosystems, and innovative approaches to the management of cork oak forests.
The last day of the conference included a technical visit to Coruche, recognized as the capital of cork, where participants explored the Quinta Grande estate, visited the Cork Oak and Cork Observatory, and the Corticeira Amorim factory, highlighting innovation and technology in cork production.

This meeting reinforces the role of the CEF in promoting forestry research in Portugal and promoting cork as a strategic resource for a sustainable and resilient bioeconomy.
