Academia and the City: Pedro Guimarães Discusses Market Rehabilitation at the 25th Anniversary of GO Porto
Researcher Pedro Guimarães, professor at the Geografia e Ordenamento do Território (IGOT) and researcher at the Centro de Estudos Geográficos (CEG), a research unit of the TERRA Associate Laboratory, was an invited speaker at the commemorative session marking the 25th anniversary of GO Porto, the municipal company responsible for managing public works in the city of Porto. The event took place in Porto and brought together experts and institutional representatives to discuss key issues related to urban development and infrastructure rehabilitation.
In his talk, entitled “Evolution and Changing Dynamics of Municipal Markets – Challenges and Reflections”, Pedro Guimarães presented an in-depth analysis of the transformation processes of these urban facilities and the multiple roles that markets play in the social, economic, and cultural dynamics of contemporary cities. According to the researcher, “interest in the rehabilitation processes of municipal markets reaffirms the importance of commerce for the vitality of cities.” Throughout his presentation, he discussed case studies, recent revitalization trends, and the challenges associated with managing these spaces, particularly the balance between tradition and innovation, and between economic and community functions.
Beyond his technical and academic contribution, Pedro Guimarães also emphasized the importance of university engagement in public planning and decision-making forums: “The participation of academia in events focused on the presentation and discussion of urban planning issues is particularly relevant, as it brings scientific knowledge closer to the concrete needs of the territory, contributing to more informed, sustainable, and inclusive public policies.”
