“35 Years of Postcards, a Lifetime of Environmental Advocacy”
TERRA Associate Laboratory highlights the remarkable work and inspiring journey of botanist and researcher Jorge Paiva, affiliated with the Centre for Functional Ecology (CFE), who has devoted his life to the study of biodiversity and to raising awareness about species conservation. He was recently featured in a segment of RTP’s Portugal em Direto, where he shared his perspective on the urgency of safeguarding natural heritage and emphasized the critical role of science in promoting environmental sustainability.
Beyond his academic research, Jorge Paiva became widely recognized for his unique approach to environmental outreach. For 35 years, he sent illustrated postcards featuring photographs of plant species along with compelling messages underscoring the need for their conservation. These postcards—addressed to scientists, policymakers, and members of the general public—evolved into a powerful campaign for environmental education, disseminating scientific knowledge and fostering ecological awareness.
This collection of postcards is now being revitalized through a groundbreaking exhibition that showcases decades of photographic work and Paiva’s tireless appeals for biodiversity protection. The exhibition not only honors Jorge Paiva’s lifelong commitment to nature conservation but also serves as a poignant reminder of our collective responsibility to safeguard the planet.
Organized in collaboration with the Department of Life Sciences at the University of Coimbra, the exhibition was inaugurated on March 12th, on the first floor of the Department of Life Sciences, located at the university’s Polo I campus.
