Marcelo Fernandes

Marcelo has a Bachelor’s degree in Geography and a Master’s degree in Physical Geography and Spatial Planning. He defended his PhD thesis, Deglaciation chronology and post-glacial environmental evolution of the Upper Garonne Valley (Central Pyrenees), on 17/03/2023. He studied the glacial evolution and the subsequent post-glacial environment based on geomorphological and sedimentary records. He established the chronology of glacial and periglacial evolution in the Upper Garonne Valley using cosmic-ray exposure dating techniques. Moreover, he used paleo-glaciers modelling to reconstruct each glacial advance/standstill during the long-term deglaciation. In addition, he focused on reconstructing the permafrost and periglacial environments concerning geomorphological features in the Central Pyrenees. Besides the Pyrenees, he has also conducted fieldwork in other cold mountains, such as the Alps, Cantabrian Mountains, Central Iberian range, and Atlas. Finally, he is involved with international research associations, such as the PYRN (Permafrost Young Research Network), where he is the national representative of Portugal.
