TERRA Associate Laboratory Publishes Feature Article on River Restoration on Florestas.pt Portal
A team of researchers from the TERRA Associate Laboratory — Forest Research Centre (CEF) at ISA — was invited by the Florestas.pt portal to write a science communication article on river restoration in Portugal. The outcome was the publication of the article entitled “Restauro fluvial: a importância de recuperar rios e ribeiras”, now available online.
The invitation came from the editorial team at Florestas.pt, in recognition of TERRA’s outstanding work in the fields of fluvial ecology and aquatic ecosystem management. The article was authored by a multidisciplinary team composed of Daniel Mameri, Maria João Costa, Ana Filipa Filipe, José Maria Santos, Paulo Branco, and Teresa Ferreira — all CEF/TERRA researchers and specialists in ecology, nature conservation, water resource management, and ecological restoration.
The main goal of the article is to raise public awareness about the importance of river restoration, explaining what it entails, why it is urgent, and what the main challenges and best practices are in recovering rivers and streams. It also highlights the relevance of ecological restoration in the context of climate change, biodiversity loss, and increasing pressure on water resources.
According to the authors, restoring a river goes far beyond returning water flow or removing physical barriers. It involves restoring the river’s ecological functions, improving water quality, enabling species migration, and enhancing the resilience of ecosystems. The article also emphasizes the need to integrate scientific knowledge into decision-making processes and to involve local communities in restoration efforts.
This contribution aligns with the mission of the TERRA Associate Laboratory to promote science-based approaches to the sustainable management of ecosystems, strengthening the connection between scientific research and civil society. The publication on Florestas.pt expands the outreach of the research conducted at TERRA, contributing to greater environmental literacy and public debate on conservation policies and the sustainable use of natural resources.
