TERRA Releases New Infographic on “Policy Briefs”: An Essential Tool for Bridging Science and Policy
The TERRA Associate Laboratory has recently launched a reference infographic, developed in collaboration with PLANAPP, which clearly and pedagogically outlines the fundamental principles for drafting policy briefs — documents that play a crucial role in bridging scientific knowledge and public policy. This publication comes at a time when dialogue between science and policymaking is increasingly essential to address the major societal and environmental challenges of our time.
The infographic is intended to be a practical and accessible tool for researchers, decision-makers, and institutions seeking to communicate scientific evidence effectively, transparently, and impactfully. The document presents two core components: a “Good Practice Guide” and a “Model Structure” for these documents. Among the key principles for drafting policy briefs are: Clear identification of the target audience; use of neutral and accessible language; support through rigorous empirical evidence and appealing graphic design that enhances readability and comprehension.
The guide also emphasizes the importance of peer review and active dissemination, proposing that the publication of a policy brief should not be an end in itself, but rather the beginning of a dialogue with policymakers and other stakeholders. In this sense, impact monitoring and follow-up on proposed measures are highlighted as key elements of a science-based policy influence cycle.
This release is part of a broader strategy by the TERRA Associate Laboratory to strengthen its position as a privileged interlocutor between the scientific community and public administration, particularly through the creation of a structured science-policy interface (SPI – Science Policy Interface). Through this effort, TERRA aims to contribute not only to socially relevant science, but also to better-informed, more effective, and more sustainable policies.
