TERRA researchers win European funding to study the interaction between the climate and biodiversity crises

Susana Barreiro, from the Forest Research Centre (CEF), and António Monteiro, from the Centre of Geographical Studies (CEG), both members of the TERRA Associate Laboratory, have received funding for the project Trees4Adapt – Addressing complex risks from climate change and biodiversity loss across systems and scales: Leveraging the potential of tree-based solutions for adaptation in Europe.

Co-ordinated by the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), the Trees4Adapt project involves international collaboration in the search for tree-based solutions as a way of mitigating the complex risks associated with the climate and biodiversity crises. In Portugal, the case study centres on the recovery of burnt areas in Serra da Estrela, a region heavily affected by forest fires and biodiversity loss in recent years.

Funded under the HORIZON-MISS-2024-CLIMA-01-04 “Research the complex interplay between the climate and biodiversity crises towards more systemic approaches and solutions” call of the Horizon Europe programme, this project is expected to support the definition of strategic priorities that strengthen climate resilience and promote the preservation of biodiversity, contributing to more integrated and sustainable solutions.

The approval of this project underlines the role of researchers at the TERRA Associate Laboratory in researching innovative solutions to global challenges such as the climate and biodiversity crises.
