Helena Freitas (CFE/TERRA) participates in Women in ESG Portugal meeting

At the end of November, Women in ESG Portugal hosted an intimate gathering at the Pérez-Llorca offices in Lisbon, offering essential insights into the future of sustainability. The event featured presentations by Professor Helena Freitas, coordinator of the Centre for Functional Ecology (CFE) and member of the TERRA Associate Laboratory, and Professor Luís Rochartre Álvares.

Among the main points highlighted, it was emphasized how political and regulatory polarization has been delaying the journey toward sustainability. The need to strengthen the nexus between climate challenges, social issues such as migration and food security, corporate governance, and the economy was also highlighted. Finally, the importance of integrating the relationship between sustainability and human rights into actions and decisions was emphasized.

This session showed that sustainability requires effective and measurable action, transparent governance, and the consistent integration of ESG criteria across all economic activity, both in Portugal and in Europe.

The meeting also saw active participation from the civic community, which shared complementary perspectives and ideas, reinforcing the collective purpose of the initiative. Currently, the Women in ESG Portugal network brings together 650 female professionals linked to ESG in Portugal, creating connections with high potential for positive impact.

With civic origins and promoting gender diversity, Women in ESG Portugal (WINESGPT) is a project that implements an ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) culture and seeks to be comprehensive, involving the whole of society.

Helena Freitas’ presence at this meeting reinforces TERRA members’ commitment to promoting scientific knowledge and collaborative leadership to address sustainability challenges.
