CFE/TERRA researchers in the spotlight at COP30: science, oceans, and climate justice at the center of international debate

Researchers from the Centre for Functional Ecology (CFE) and members of the TERRA Associate Laboratory, Helena Freitas and Filipa Bessa, attended the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), which took place between November 10 and 21 in Belém do Pará, Brazil.

Helena Freitas, coordinator of CFE and the Unesco Chair in Biodversity and Conservation for Sustainable Development, participated in the official conference program with presentations in sessions dedicated to Biosphere Reserves, the enhancement of biocultural heritage, and the development of post-COP30 agendas. She highlighted the importance of public science and international cooperation in addressing the socio-ecological challenges of the Amazon and other vulnerable regions.

Filipa Bessa, a researcher at CFE’s Marine Research Lab, participated in three sessions, focusing her intervention on climate integrity and the centrality of the ocean in the global climate agenda. As part of her participation, the researcher emphasized on her LinkedIn profile that “the ocean is not optional — it is a stabilizer and a source of hope for a 1.5°C world,” calling for an integrated approach that brings together science, public policy, and social justice — see her full reflection here (in Portuguese).

Their participation reinforced the role of Portuguese science in the international dialogue on biodiversity, oceans, environmental governance, and climate justice, highlighting the contribution of TERRA members in the production of transdisciplinary knowledge and the construction of sustainable solutions to global challenges.
