Akli Benali (CEF/TERRA) participates in SIC special report on forest fire prevention
In SIC’s “Essencial” TV report, researcher Akli Benali (CEF/TERRA) warns of the need to rethink firefighting and reinforces the importance of preventive strategies outside the critical season.
Researcher Akli Benali, a member of the ForEco group at the Forest Research Centre (CEF) and the TERRA Associate Laboratory, was one of the experts interviewed in the report “Essencial,” broadcast by SIC, on the challenges and strategies for preventing new episodes of extreme fires in Portugal.
The report comes after a summer marked by large-scale fires, with the largest area ever burned in Portugal. Throughout the program, civil protection professionals, researchers, and fire management experts were interviewed.
In his speech, Akli Benali (CEF/TERRA) defended the need to rethink the approach to fighting fires, stressing that “we need a different kind of approach with specialized professionals who are dedicated solely to fighting fires.” The researcher also highlighted the importance of working with fire in winter as part of a more effective and integrated preventive strategy.
