On June 27, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Teatro Thalia will host the event “Transformative Knowledge: Science and Policy for TERRA”, an initiative organized by the TERRA Associate Laboratory aiming to strengthen the connection between scientific production and political decision-making in crucial areas such as the environment, health, and spatial planning.
This event takes on particular relevance at a time when environmental and social challenges require structured, interdisciplinary, and scientifically grounded responses. The opening session will feature remarks by Teresa Ferreira, Chair of the TERRA Coordinating Council; Madalena Alves, President of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT); Cecília Rodrigues, Vice-Rector of the University of Lisbon; and Rui Ladeira, Secretary of State for Forests.
Throughout the day, national and international experts will discuss mechanisms through which scientific knowledge can be mobilized to effectively and concretely transform public policy. Highlights of the morning session include Carolina Gameiro Nogueira, Deputy Director of PLANAPP, addressing the building of bridges between science and public administration; Marion Dupoux, policy analyst at the Joint Research Centre & Knowledge4Policy (K4P), discussing behavioral approaches to implementing green policies; and José Paulo Sousa, from CFE-TERRA, emphasizing the importance of partnerships between academia and public entities in the context of soil governance.
A central moment of the event will be the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between TERRA and ten national public entities — including ICNF, IPMA, DGS, APA, DGAV, AGIF, ApC, DGADR, DGT, and GPP — all of which have responsibilities in environmental and territorial management. This protocol aims to establish a permanent collaboration network between science and public administration, aligned with sustainability and collective well-being.
In the afternoon, two roundtables will delve into critical topics. The first, on the sustainability of land use, will be moderated by Helena Freitas (CFE-TERRA) and will include discussions on collaborative spatial planning, biological pest control, and intervention landscapes. The second, moderated by Ana Abreu (ISAMB-TERRA), will gather experts to explore the interlinkages between food decarbonization, public health in the face of climate change, and integrative ways of living in cities.
The event will serve as an open forum among diverse stakeholders, reinforcing the mission of the TERRA Associate Laboratory to act as a bridge between science, society, and governance.
