Helena Freitas, professor at the Departamento de Ciências da Vida (DCV) at the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra (FCTUC) and researcher at the TERRA Associate Laboratory is the 2024 winner of the Ernst Haeckel Prize, promoted by the European Ecological Federation (EEF).
The Ernst Haeckel Prize, awarded for the first time in 2011, aims to honor an ecologist for the outstanding contribution to European Ecological Science.
Each European Ecological Federation (EEF) Member Organisation is invited to submit one nomination for the Ernst Haeckel Prize – the candidacy for this award was proposed by the Sociedade Portuguesa de Ecologia (SPECO). Professor and researcher Helena Freitas will now be invited to deliver an opening plenary, key-note lecture at the biennial EEF Congress and will also receive a certificate and a medal.
Throughout her career, professor and researcher Helena Freitas has contributed to better knowledge about the functional ecology of Mediterranean vegetation and the management of exotic and invasive species as a strategy to minimize the loss of ecosystem diversity.
