CFE/TERRA Professor Helena Freitas was one of the guest speakers at the first ERC-Portugal event to debate the connections between Science and Politics, with a view to a more digital and environmentally sustainable Europe.
The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) organised the first event dedicated to the ERC-Portugal Programme yesterday, December 2, at the Rectory of the University of Lisbon (ULisboa), which was attended by Maria Leptin, President of the ERC (European Research Council).
The event’s programme included the round table “Linking Science and Policy for a Carbon Neutral and Digital Europe”, with the participation of Helena Freitas, coordinator of the Centre for Functional Ecology (CFE) and member of the TERRA Associated Laboratory, as guest speaker.
Professor Helena Freitas shared the stage with the Secretary of State for Science, Ana Paiva, the President of the ERC, Maria Leptin, and the researcher from ULisboa’s Instituto Superior Técnico, André Martins, contributing to the discussion on the critical research needs to achieve a carbon-neutral Europe.
To close the event, FCT Vice-President Francisco Santos presented the ERC-Portugal Programme, as an instrument to support the scientific community in the several cycles of national participation in ERC tenders. Some new features were also announced regarding this financing, namely more support in preparing proposals, financing for projects that have obtained an ‘A’ rating so that they can be improved and started, and the opening of permanent positions for ERC-funded researchers.
