António Lopes is an Associate Professor at IGOT-ULisboa, and a researcher at the Center for Geographical Studies (CEG), “Climate Change and Environmental Systems – Zephyrus” research group. He holds a PhD in Physical Geography and is a member of the “F3 – Food Farm and Forestry”, the Tropical College of the University of Lisbon and Associate Laboratory TERRA. Member of the International Society of Biometeorology – ISB and the International Association of Urban Climate – IAUC. He collaborates with other associations, namely: AIC – International Association of Climatology; APG – Portuguese Association of Geographers; RISCOS – Portuguese Association of Risks, Prevention and Safety. He is a topic editor of the Atmosphere (MDPI), guest editor of Discover Cities (Springer Nature) and section editor of Finisterra – Portuguese Journal of Geography. The main research interests are: Urban Climate and Climate Change; Thermal Comfort and Health; Environment and Urban Ecology; Micrometeorological modeling, Thermal Remote Sensing. In 2005 he received the “Scientific Recognition Award” from the Association of Portuguese Municipalities Network of Healthy Cities, and an Honorable Mention in the 2023 Universidade de Lisboa/Caixa Geral de Depósitos Awards, in the Geography and Territory category. He is the coordinator of the Master’s in Physical Geography and Spatial Planning at IGOT – ULisboa. He teaches several undergraduate and master’s courses in the areas of: Urban Climatology; Climate and Society; GIS and Remote Sensing; Modeling and Urban Ecology, among others. As a guest professor, he maintained regular teaching at the Instituto Superior Técnico, and collaborates with the doctoral school in “Environmental Health” of the Faculty of Medicine and “Development Studies” (ISEG/IGOT/ICS/ISA). He supervised several doctoral thesis (14), and more than two dozen of master’s degrees, and various internships for students from Freiburg and Berlin (Germany), S. Paulo, Campinas, Piracicaba and Natal (Brazil), on topics of Urban Climatology, Human Thermal Comfort, spatial Planning, Climate Risks and Resources. In recent years he has been involved in several national and international projects, among them: “URBKLIM – Climate and urban sustainability: perception of comfort and climatic risks”; “SECOA – Solutions for Environmental Contrasts in Coastal Areas”; “ADVICE: Annual to decadal variations in climate in Europe”, and IN-HALE – Indoor heat exposure and adaptation attitudes in the elderly population. He currently integrates the team of projects: “eMOTIONAL Cities – Mapping the cities through the senses of those who make them” (H2020); How we see the Ocean – An interactive experience; and Change4Fire – Modelling climate and land cover changes for future fire hazard assessment. He also coordinated several climate change adaptation plans, among them the “Metropolitan Plan for Climate Change Adaptation in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area”; and participated, as a specialist in Climate Change, in the “National Plan for Territorial Development of Mozambique” and the Drought Risk Assessment in the project “The Natural Hazards of Cape Verde”, for UNDP/UN.”
