Building and calibration of empirical and hybrid/process-based forest growth models. Development of forest simulation tools that integrate and combine growth models developed for the most relevant Portuguese tree species, forest structures and mixtures with the impacts of external drivers such as adaptive forest management approaches, land use changes, market demand, climate changes and disturbances. Thus, research interests cover a wide range of topics from forest inventory and modelling, to sustainable forest management including adaptation and mitigation strategies with a strong focus on forest profitability and the evolution of market demands for various ecosystem services and economic analysis. Forest ecosystem services valuation and risk assessment in particular from fire and pest attacks.

Susana C. Gonçalves, PhD (Biology, Ecology) has founded and now coordinates the MyCoLAB at the Centre for Functional Ecology, after joining the University of Coimbra in 2019 as a junior researcher. Her laboratory generates knowledge about fungi: their biodiversity, ecology and conservation (including extinction risk), and their use in applied contexts for sustainability. Since the start of her contract, Susana has published three times in top journals: Science, Frontiers in Ecology and Environment, and Nature Communications. Of the papers published since 2019, 78 % are in the top 25 % of the most cited papers worldwide, with a total of 459 citations. The number of co-authors has increased to 129, of which 73 % are international. She has co-authored an international report and edited a book. She has also organized and participated in several scientific meetings as a member of the respective committees, session organizer or guest speaker. Since 2019, she has coordinated or been part of the team of different kinds of research projects (African Union, Erasmus+), including citizen science-based. Susana is currently supervising two PhD students, and has supervised several undergraduate internships and three master thesis. She has taken part in several juries for master’s and doctoral theses. She teaches a second cycle course offered at the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Coimbra for various master degrees and also as a non-degree course. She is a member of the Species Survival Commission of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (www.iucn.org), the current chair of the European Council for the Conservation of Fungi (www.eccf.eu) and an associate researcher of SPUN (www.spun.earth) and the Pringle Lab (https://pringlelab.botany.wisc.edu).

Susete Maria Gonçalves Marques. She’s a researcher at Forest Research Center and Associated Laboratory TERRA at School of Agriculture, University of Lisbon. She works in the areas of fire risk and damage models, forest management planning, multiple criteria optimization and trade-off analysis. Principal investigator in ISA in 2 national research projects and actively participates in 8 national and international projects (e.g., FCT FP7, Cost, Marie Curie, H2020). Since 2021 she is part of the MEDfOR scientific course committee at ISA. Co-author of 29 international peer/reviewed publications and 6 book chapters. Has 19 years of experience in forestry-related research and has supervised 2 PhD students and 8 MSc students. Her Scopus H index is 15.

M. Teresa FERREIRA is Full Professor at the Department of Natural Resources, Environment and Landscape at the University of Lisbon. She has a biologist background, a post-graduation on Freshwater Ecology, and a PhD and Habilitation in Forest Engineering and Natural Resources Management. She works on freshwater ecology and management, with special interest on ecological quality, fish community ecology, fish habitat requirements and riparian ecology. She is responsible for the MSc in Management and Conservation of Natural Resources and the international PhD on River Restoration and Management. Teresa developed research activities in 56 national and European competitive projects, and was involved in an identical number of applied studies (ecohydraulics, ecological monitoring, fisheries, river restoration). She published 200 peer-reviewed papers (h-index 39, https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3900-1460) and presented over 400 oral communications. Teresa acts as administration advisor for water management affairs and is a member of the National Water Council and of the Science Council for the Portuguese National Science Foundation.

Teresa Maria Quilhó. He is an Assistant Researcher (career) at the University of Lisbon Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA) and at the research unit Centro de Estudos Florestais (CEF) of ISA. He holds a degree in Biology from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon and a PhD in Forestry Engineering from the Instituto Superior de Agronomia, University of Lisbon (1998). Area of ​​scientific activity: Science and Technology of Lignocellulosic Materials with a focus on the anatomy of wood and non-wood materials, their properties and variability. Responsible for the Plant Anatomy Laboratory, Xylotheque and Laminotheque of the Center for Forestry Studies (CEF). Supervision of research projects, and guidance of master’s, doctoral and post-doctoral students in Plant Anatomy. Specialist in wood identification (conifers and hardwoods) from temperate and tropical regions. Consultant: wood identification for industry, commerce, customs, courts (as a judicial expert) and in other areas such as archaeology and conservation. Organization and coordination of Workshops for Wood Identification. Member of the International Association of Anatomists of Madeira (IAWA).

TERESA MARIA SANTANA BARRETO SOARES DAVID. Tiago Lopes completed his Ph.D. in Tourism at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning at University of Lisbon (IGOT-UL). He holds a master’s degree in Tourism specialized in Planning and Management in Nature and Adventure Tourism and a Bachelor’s degree in Leisure Management and Tourism Entertainment from the Estoril Higher Institute for Hotel and Tourism Studies (ESHTE). Currently, he holds teaching positions at the ISG – Business & Economics School and ESHTE. He is an integrated researcher at the Center for Geographic Studies (CEG, IGOT-UL) and a Collaborating Researcher at the Centre for Tourism Research, Development and Innovation (CiTUR – Estoril). In addition to his teaching career, he has worked in tourism planning in nature, being responsible for the development of a nature tourism office associated with the management of peri-urban natural areas. His main areas of interest and research focus on tourist planning, tourism management, service quality, creative experiences, adventure tourism, recreation, and events.

Vítor D. Alves is Assistant Professor of Food Engineering at School of Agriculture of University of Lisbon, and researcher at LEAF—Linking, Landscape, Environment, Agriculture and Food Research Center. His research is mainly focused on biodegradable active films for food packaging, characterization of novel microbial exopolysaccharides, and encapsulation of bioactive compounds. He holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering, membrane processes, from Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.

Researcher. Pragmatic research activities: Characterization of variability on Hemileia vastatrix (Coffee Leaf Rust – CLR) and Colletotrichum kahawae (Coffee Berry Disease – CBD); Screening of coffee genotypes to CLR and CBD; Selection of resistant materials; Support to breeding programmes to CLR and CBD in coffee growing countries; Visit to different coffee growing countries to i) develop collaborative projects with different coffee research institutions; ii) participation in workshops, meetings with coffee researchers, technicians and coffee farmers related with durable resistance on coffee to the main diseases: Colombia (CENICAFE); Brazil (UFV, EPAMIG, IAC, UFLA, EMBRAPA and IAPAR); Kenya (CRF); Tanzania (TaCRI), India (CCRI); Cameroon (IRAD), Zimbabwe (CGA), Angola (INCA), Thailand (CMRARC), People’s Republic of China (DTARY), Costa Rica (ICAFE, CATIE). Supervisor and adviser of PhD, MSc as well as responsible for short and medium period training of researchers and technicians from coffee growing countries at CIFC.

Jubilee Full Professor with a long teaching activity in the areas of Genetics and Cell Biology at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia, University of Lisbon and a research activity oriented to genomes dynamic behavior in terms of genetic and epigenetic changes mediated by genomes interactions and environmental factors, both in crops, model species and human cell lines. In this context, coordinated / participated in several research projects, and also oriented /co-oriented dozens of PhD and Masters students. Is the co-author of more than a hundred articles published in international journals.

I am a Biologist at the Centre for Functional Ecology, University of Coimbra, Portugal. My research interest is to use Microbial Biotechnology in both sustainable agriculture and environmental decontamination under global climate-change scenarios, with a focus on the mechanisms underlying plant-microbe-soil interactions, which comprises the combination of fundamental biological principles with applied technologies. I work in an interdisciplinary manner to effectively address complex problems and emerging threats that challenge agricultural production and bioremediation efficiency.
