João Farminhão, researcher at the TERRA Associate Laboratory, compiles Portugal’s contributions to the discovery of new species in 2024

João Farminhão has compiled Portugal’s contributions to the description of new species for science, having himself collaborated in the description of new species.

This compilation was reported by Público, describing how 2024 was a landmark year for Portuguese science, with the description of over 80 new species, covering fungi, plants, bacteria, and various invertebrates. Among the scientists who contributed to this advancement is João Farminhão, from the Centre for Functional Ecology (CFE) at the University of Coimbra and the TERRA Associate Laboratory, who, in collaboration, identified and cataloged two new species of orchids.

Included in the list of scientific contributions from 2024 by TERRA researchers is the description of a new tree species from the “loendro” family from the island of Príncipe, resulting from the collaboration of TERRA researcher Jorge Paiva and Filipe Covelo, both from the University of Coimbra, along with Olivier Lachenaud from the Meise Botanical Garden in Belgium. New species of fungi associated with limestone rocks were also described by Diana Paiva, a PhD student at the CFE.

The discovery of new species is essential for understanding biodiversity and preserving ecosystems, being a critical step for conservation strategies and nature protection, as well as for understanding the ecological interactions that shape ecosystems. The work developed by TERRA researchers is part of this commitment, reinforcing the importance of scientific research in understanding and safeguarding natural heritage.
