Professor and Researcher Helena Freitas appointed national representative of the MAB Programme

Helena Freitas, professor at the Department of Life Sciences (DCV) at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC) and researcher at the Associate Laboratory TERRA was appointed as national representative of the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) programme of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

«It is with great enthusiasm that I will represent Portugal on the International Coordinating Council of the MAB Programme (UNESCO) by appointment of the Minister of the Environment and Climate Action. This is an opportunity to follow and participate in the future development of the “Man and the Biosphere” programme», says Helena Freitas.

The MAB Programme develops the basis within the natural and social sciences for the rational and sustainable use and conservation of the resources of the biosphere and for the improvement of the overall relationship between people and their environment. It predicts the consequences of today’s actions on tomorrow’s world and thereby increases people’s ability to efficiently manage natural resources for the well-being of both human populations and the environment.
