Extreme events and territorial resilience are the focus of the TERRA 2026 Annual Meeting

The TERRA Associate Laboratory marks World Earth Day with its Annual Meeting, which in 2026 will focus on the consequences of severe weather and extreme events caused by climate change in Portugal. The session will take place in the Orlando Ribeiro Auditorium at the IGOT (Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning) on April 22.

In a context where phenomena such as floods, severe droughts, storms, and wildfires are becoming increasingly frequent, TERRA reinforces its mission: to generate and disseminate scientific knowledge aimed at solving real-world problems, supporting decision-making in public policy, and contributing to the development of a more resilient region.

The Annual Meeting will mark the official presentation of the four Policy Briefs developed as part of the TERRA Policy Hub, which took place in December 2025. These documents summarize clear recommendations grounded in the best available science, focusing on areas where TERRA has extensive experience in research and intervention: Green cities and urban resilience; Sustainable agroforestry systems; Valorization of scientific collections; Nature-based solutions.

The program will also feature a roundtable discussion titled “From Shock to Adaptation: Responding to Floods, Droughts, Storms, and Wildfires in Portugal,” bringing together experts from various fields to discuss strategies for adaptation, mitigation, and response to climate impacts in Portugal.

During the event, a Memorandum of Cooperation will also be signed between the Municipality of Odemira and the TERRA Associate Laboratory, formalizing a joint commitment to developing scientific, educational, and regional development initiatives. This collaboration reinforces the commitment to public policies grounded in the best available scientific knowledge and to creating synergies that promote the region’s resilience and sustainable development.

The Annual Meeting of the TERRA Associate Laboratory is intended to be an opportunity for reflection, sharing, and mobilization, highlighting the importance of integrating science, the local environment, and society in addressing the climate challenges facing Portugal.
