Alina Esteves completed her PhD in Geography on 2005/04/21 at the University of Lisbon. She is an Associate Professor at the University of Lisbon Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning. Co-coordinator of the Migrare Research Group – Migrations, Spaces and Societies at the Center for Geographical Studies. Coordinator of the Master’s Degree in Human Geography at IGOT-ULisboa. Member of the School Council of IGOT-ULisboa. Country coordinator for Portugal of the “European Web Site on Integration” (EWSI), whose general coordination is ensured by the Migration Policy Group (Brussels). Member (representative of teachers) of the Equality Committee of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Lisbon. He has published several articles in specialized journals in the area of ​​migration (Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies), population (Population, Space and Place), Geography (Finisterra). He works in the area(s) of Social Sciences with an emphasis on Economic and Social Geography and has participated in several national and international projects with competitive funding. It is part of the network of research centers in the area of ​​international migration – IMISCOE. He has supervised several doctoral and master’s students in the areas of Economic and Social Geography.

Ana Carina Azevedo (HTC – NOVA FCSH – CFE/UC) holds a PhD in History (Contemporary History), from Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, with the thesis “Scientific Management in Portugal after World War II (1945-1974)”. She is a researcher at NOVA FCSH and her main research interests are related to the Portuguese History of the 20th century, namely Economic and Social History, Labor History and the History of Public Administration. She has also developed some work on Heritage Studies. She has collaborated in several research projects, such as “Portugal 1914-1918” and “História e Arquivo Ciência Viva – Agência Nacional para a Cultura Científica e Tecnológica”. She recently concluded a post-doctoral research project, with funding from Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, titled “A State in search of effectiveness? Administrative Reforms of the “Estado Novo” in historical perspective (1933-1974)”.

Since 2014, she has participated as a member of collaborator of different research projects funded by the Portuguese Agency for Science and Technology (FCT), the Portuguese General Directorate for Higher Education (DGES), the Erasmus+ Portuguese Agency, the European Cultural Foundation, and Leonardo da Vinci. She has presented c. 100 talks at national and international conferences and she is the author of up to 50 publications, namely the book Reinventing a Small, Worldly City: The Cultural and Social Transformation of Cardiff, published in 2017 by Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group. She has been the recipient of up to 20 grants, distinctions, and prizes by renowned institutions (European Cultural Foundation, Europa Nostra Awards, ENCATC, FCT, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Marie Curie Actions, Luso-American Foundation, and the Portuguese National Agency for Innovation – ANI). She has also been an external expert/evaluator for the European Commission (Directorate-General Regional and Urban Policy and Research Executive Agency), the Erasmus+ National Agency, and the Fundação Cidade de Lisboa (Lisbon City Foundation), as well as a reviewer for more than 15 national and international journals in urban studies, cultural studies, tourism, intergenerational studies, education, and languages. She is Associate Editor of the Journal of Intergenerational Relationships and Member of the Editorial Board of the Language Learning in Higher Education, the New Trends in Qualitative Research journal, the Ler Educação, and EduSer. She is also a member of the executive committee of ReCLes.pt – the Portuguese Association of Language Centres in Portuguese Higher Education since 2021.

Ana Louro (June 16th, 1987) is Geographer and researcher at the Centre for Geographical Studies, University of Lisbon, since 2010. Graduated in Geography, Human area (FLUL-UL, 2008). Held a Master in Spatial Management and Urbanism (IGOT-UL, 2011), with the thesis “The use of time associated with the mobility of families as a differentiating factor in setting up a sustainable community”. In 2019, completed her PhD in Geography, specialization in Regional and Urban Planning (IGOT-UL, 2012 -2019), funded by FCT (PhD Scholarship SFRH/BD/85150/2012). She also has a Master in Education of Geography (IGOT). Her research topics are related with urban sustainability and sustainable communities, uses of time and daily life of families, urban mobility and sustainable urban mobility plans, healthy and livable cities, Cohesion Policy and monitoring and evaluation of policies. She has collaborated on several national research projects (eg. INCAP, SPOTIA, FURBS, Quality of Life and Management of the city), international research projects (eg. EuroBroadMap, Local Health Promotion for Construction of Healthy Cities), beyond the participation in service provision activities being part of the portuguese team mainly for EC / DG Region projects about the Cohesion Policy. Participated in several symposia and national and international scientific seminars, related to her research topics, projects and theses, published several chapters and articles in peer reviewed scientific journals, and contributed to the organization of nacional and international scientific events (AESOP 2017 Congress, 12th IUPEA Symposium 2016, RSA Workshop on the EU Cohesion Policy 2015; IV RIDOT Workshop 2015).

Ana Teresa Madeira Sarmento is a nutritionist (community nutrition and public health specialist) and a researcher. She has a degree in Nutrition and Dietetics (2009) and a master degree in Metabolic Diseases and Food Behaviour (2013), both from Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de Lisboa (FMUL). Teresa has worked as a clinical nutritionist, food safety auditor and lecturer. Since 2014, she is a researcher at Instituto de Medicina Preventiva (Institute of Preventive Medicine and Public Health) and Instituto de Saúde Ambiental (Institute of Environmental Health), FMUL. Teresa was the executive coordinator of the PEN-3S project, promoted by FMUL and financed by the EEA Grants Financial Mechanism. PEN-3S’ main aim was to characterise the nutritional status and food intake of community-dwelling and nursing home residents aged 65+ in Portugal. Proceeding her work as a PEN-3S researcher, Teresa concluded her PhD on nutrition and ageing at FMUL in 2022. Since September 2020 she is also Invited Assistant at FMUL, and Invited Adjunct Professor at Estoril Higher Institute for Tourism and Hotel Studies (Escola Superior de Hotelaria e Turismo do Estoril, ESHTE).

Angela Inácio, completed her PhD in Biology in 2005 at the University of Lisbon. During his PhD project, he developed his research work at the Genetics Department of the National Institute of Health Dr Ricardo Jorge and at the University of Pennsylvania, in the United States. During this period (in 2002) she joined (part-time) the teaching staff of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, at the time as a Guest Assistant, a position she held until 2005. After completing her Doctorate, her collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine remained part-time, but changed to Guest Assistant Professor, a position she holds to this day. After his PhD, he did a Post-Doctorate at the Genetics Department of the National Institute of Health Dr. Ricardo Jorge (2005-2008). This was followed by a position as Science Researcher (2009-2013) at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. She is currently a researcher at the Bento da Rocha Cabral Scientific Research Institute. His research areas focus on genetics, gene expression and epigenetics.

Brígida Riso is a health sociologist and researcher. Her research interests are mainly biobanks, biomedical research, health in datified societies, and artificial intelligence. She has developed an original research on the relevance of biobanks in health configuration in the contemporary Portuguese society. Her approach usually combines sociology of health and illness and social studies of science, looking into ethics and research integrity. She has been an advocate and a trainer in research integrity and open science. Brígida holds a PhD in Sociology by Iscte-IUL, a MSc. in Health, Medicine & Society (Sociology of Health and Illness) and a degree in Nursing. Currently she is assistant professor (invited) at Lisbon School of Medicine.

Jurist, Advisor to the Rector and Assistant Professor in the area of ​​Law, specialist in the area of ​​Intellectual Property and Data Protection. She is co-coordinator of the Privacy and Data Protection Centre and Executive and Editorial Director of the academic and scientific journal Privacy and Data Protection Magazine, published by the European University (2021). Integrated researcher at the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P, Portugal, at the Functional Ecological Center and at the TERRA Laboratory – University of Coimbra and University of Lisbon. Visiting researcher at the University of Oxford, St Antony’s College (2005), with a grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

I am an Assistant Professor at the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Coimbra and a researcher at the Centre for Functional Ecology, where I co-lead, with Hélia Marchante, the Biological Invasions research line (INVASORAS.PT Lab), focused on invasive plants. My work combines fundamental and applied science, from biological control — including the first release of a biological control agent against invasive plants in continental Europe — to citizen science, ecological networks, and remote sensing. Beyond research and teaching, I co-coordinate the INVASORAS.PT platform and organize outreach and public engagement initiatives that promote participatory management of biological invasions.

Elsa Teresa Rodrigues received her PhD degree in biosciences from the University of Coimbra (UC), Portugal, on June 1, 2016. With her PhD thesis, she was awarded an honourable mention, ranked third, of the Doctorate Award in Ecology 2017- Amadeu Dias Foundation by the Portuguese Ecological Society. Currently, she holds a Junior Researcher position at UC (CEECIND/03543/2017), and has her research affiliation to the Centre for Functional Ecology – Science for People & the Planet (CFE-UC). In this centre, she integrates the Marine Resources, Conservation and Technology research group. Elsa is also a researcher at the Portuguese Associate Laboratory TERRA, and a member of ACOI, the Coimbra Collection of Algae. At international level, she is linked to the European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC) and is a collaborator of the Experimental and Applied Aquatic Ecology research group of the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO, Brazil). Since December 2020, Elsa is a member of the Topical Advisory Panel of the peer-reviewed journal Water (MDPI) and was Guest Editor of its Special Issue: Pathogens of Zoonotic Importance in the Aquatic Environment: Implications for Environmental and Human Health. To date (January 4, 2024), Elsa has a total of 26 Web of Science Core Collection publications (492 times cited) in the quartiles Q1 (73%), Q2 (23%) and Q3 (4%). In 69% of these articles, she is first or last author, and in one third foreign teams were involved. Elsa is also co-author of a United Nations SDG-14 Springer Encyclopaedia chapter. She annually participates in the teaching activities of the Department of Life Sciences of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of UC, having 38 hours allocated to the current academic year (2023/2024). From 2016, Elsa has been successful in mentoring young researchers as she already supervised two MSc and seven undergraduate students. Currently, she co-supervises one PhD student, and supervises one MSc and one undergraduate students.

Filipe Castro is a researcher at História, Territórios e Comunidades, in the Center for Functional Ecology, University of Coimbra. From 2001 to 2021 he was the Frederick R. Mayer II Professor of Anthropology at Texas A&M University and the Director of the J. Richard Steffy Ship Reconstructing Laboratory. He concluded his civil engineering degree in 1984 and a post-graduation in recuperation of old buildings and monuments in 1986. He worked as a civil engineer until the early 1990s, when he moved into management, working for the Portuguese government and completing an MBA in 1994. In 1995 he became manager at Centro Nacional de Arqueologia Náutica e Subaquática (CNANS), the Portuguese state agency for nautical archaeology. This work eventually led him to leave his managing career in 1998 and enroll in the Nautical Archaeology Program at Texas A&M University, where he finished his PhD in 2001 and started teaching as invited professor. In 2002 he was hired as assistant professor with an endowed chair, in 2008 he was promoted to associate professor and in 2012 to full professor. His main research interests cluster around early modern European seafaring and history of shipbuilding. He has conducted fieldwork in Brazil, Panama, Puerto Rico, Portugal, Spain, Italy and Croatia. He is the author of the books A Nau de Portugal (2003) and the Pepper Wreck, A Portuguese Indiaman at the Mouth of the Tagus River (2005), and co-editor of Heritage at Sea (2022), with Ana Crespo and Nigel Nayling, Edge of Empire, Proceedings of the Symposium held at 2006 SHA Annual Meeting (2008), with Katie Custer, and ACUA Underwater Archaeology Proceedings of the 2011 Annual Meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology (2011), with Lindsey Thomas.

Franz Buhr is a researcher at the Centre of Geographical Studies, University of Lisbon, where he obtained a PhD degree in migration studies. He was a Marie Sklodowska-Curie junior researcher within the initial training network INTEGRIM. He holds an Erasmus Mundus MSc degree in sociology of migration awarded by the University College Dublin. His research lies at the intersection between migration and urban studies and he is particularly interested in migrants’ role in transforming urban space, urban mobilities, practical knowledges, and navigation. He has recently led fieldwork for the H2020 SMARTDEST project, in which he examined the commercial landscape transformation driven by the demands of transient populations in Lisbon. He coordinates an IMISCOE research initiative on privileged mobilities called PriMob.

Gabriela Albuquerque, MPH, PhD is a nutritionist specialist in Community Nutrition and Public Health. She finished her PhD in Public Health in 2021 (University of Porto), with the thesis “Street food in Central Asia and Eastern Europe” (SFRH/BD/118630/2016). She graduated in Nutrition Sciences and obtained a master’s degree in Public Health from the same university. Gabriela has integrated several research teams in multidisciplinary projects in the areas of Public Health, Nutrition and Food Systems and has been collaborating, by providing expertise in these fields, with international organisations such as the WHO-Europe, FAO and the European Commission. She is currently Invited Assistant Researcher at the School of Agriculture, University of Lisbon (ISA), and integrated member of the LEAF (Linking Landscape, Environment, Agriculture And Food) Research Centre and the TERRA Associate Laboratory (Laboratory for Sustainable Land Use and Ecosystem Services), and also invited PhD researcher at the Institute of Public Health University of Porto (ISPUP) and at the ITR (Laboratory for Integrative and Translational Research in Population Health) associate laboratory (member of the “Health Communication” laboratory). Her research interests focus on the assessment of health and nutrition determinants, particularly under the food environment and food system perspectives.

Hugo Costa Osorio. Completed his PhD in Biology on 2013/10/11 at the University of Évora Institute of Research and Advanced Training. He is a Senior Technician at the National Institute of Health Doctor Ricardo Jorge IP Center for Studies of Vectors and Infectious Diseases Doctor Francisco Cambournac. Inês holds a PhD in Geography, specializing in Geographic Information Science (University of Lisbon). She is currently an Assistant Professor at the Universidade de Lisboa’s – Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (IGOT-ULisboa), a researcher in the Laboratory for Sustainable Land Use and Ecosystem Services (Lab TERRA) and a researcher in the Tourism, Heritage & Space group (TERRITUR). Between 2017-2020 Inês was an Assistant Professor in Spatial Planning and Modelling at the University of Groningen, where she was the Chief Modelling Officer at the Centre for Advanced Studies in Urban Science and Design (CASUS). Inês has taught subjects in doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s programs in the subjects of urbanism, planning and spatial modelling, namely on how geosimulation models can provide powerful tools for exploring spatial patterns that occur in urban settings. Her scientific research agenda employs urban analytics and spatial analysis to explore the social and spatial consequences of tourism. In addition, she has explored urban tourism patterns and spatial planning responses to gear cities towards future sustainable pathways. To explore these phenomena, Inês uses a mixed-method approach including Geographical Information Systems and Information and communication technologies. She has been particularly interested in the application of such methodologies to study how behavioural changes at the micro-level can produce critical changes at the macro-level in urban systems, specifically focusing on tourism dynamics as a disruptive phenomenon. Inês received recognised awards, such as the Excellence in Teaching Award: Citizens in the New Urban Agenda awarded by the Association of European Schools of Planning. Inês is the author of several scientific publications in international journals and books, supervisor of several theses and member of several committees. Most of these published works have a strong component in tourism, sustainability, geospatial modelling, and the decision-making process. She was a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Tourism Futures (2018-2022).

Isabel Henriques is an Associate Professor at the Department of Life Sciences, University of Coimbra. Graduated in Biology in 1997, earned a MSc in Molecular Microbiology in 2001 and a PhD in Biology in 2006 from the University of Aveiro. After a post-doc period, was an Assistant Researcher from 2013 to 2018 at CESAM, University of Aveiro. From 2013 to 2016 acted as Special Visiting Researcher at Federal University of Pará (Brazil). João Gama Marques (MD, MSc, PhD) graduated from medical school at Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal (2006), where he has also been teaching psychiatry for years (2009). He finished his residency in adult psychiatry at Hospital Júlio de Matos, Centro Hospitalar Psiquiátrico de Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal (2013), where he develops his clinical and research work. João Gama Marques was awarded with the European Federation of Psychiatric Trainees’ scholarship in London, England, United Kingdom (2012); the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology’s fellowship in Tokyo, Japan (2016); and the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology’s scholarship in Oxford, England, United Kingdom (2016). João Gama Marques received his Psychopharmacology Masters (MSc) from the Neuroscience Educational Institute in Carlsbad, California, United States of America (2018); and completed his Neuroscience Doctorate (PhD) at Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de Lisboa, Lisbon (2020). João Gama Marques has been working in Hospital da Luz, Lisboa, Portugal since 2013 and achieved the position of graduate consultant psychiatrist at Hospital Júlio de Matos, Centro Hospitalar Psiquiátrico de Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal, since 2023. João Gama Marques main interests are focused in clinical and research work with the people living homeless in Lisboa, Portugal, affected by treatment resistant primary (idiopathic) and secondary (organic) psychosis, from schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders spectra.

Jorge Rocha, geographer. He is MSc in Geographic Information Systems (2003) and in Spatial Planning (2013), and PhD in Geographic Information Science (2012). Currently is an Associate Professor of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (IGOT) and member of the Modelling, Urban and Regional Planning, and Environmental Hazard and Risk Assessment and Management research groups of the Centre of Geographical Studies, all from the University of Lisbon and also belongs to the Associate Laboratory TERRA. His field of expertise is Geosimulation and Geocomputation involving Artificial Neural Networks, Graphs Theory, Cellular Automata, and Multi-agent Systems. Jorge works are quite diverse, focusing mainly on, but not exclusively, in Urban Morphology, Remote Sensing, Land Use-Cover, Epidemiology, Health Geography, Smart Cities and Big Data. He is IGOT coordinator of the Postgraduate Studies, of the Postgraduate Update Course in Geographic Information Technologies and Spatial Planning (TIG/OT) and of the Laboratory for Remote Sensing, Geographical Analysis and Modelling (GeoModLab).

Margarida Queirós (margaridav@edu.ulisboa.pt) is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (IGOT), University of Lisbon and a permanent researcher at the Center for Geographical Studies (CEG), University of Lisbon. Maria Lucinda Fonseca is graduated in Geography (1978) and holds a PhD in Human Geography from the University of Lisbon (1989). She is currently Full Professor of Human Geography and Migration Studies at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (IGOT), University of Lisbon. She is the founder and the Scientific Coordinatorof the Research Unit MIGRARE – Migration, spaces and societies at the Centre for Geographical Studies (CEG) of the same institute ((2008- January 2024). She is also the Director of the PhD Program on Migration Studies at the University of Lisbon, since its creation (2011) to date. Professor Fonseca is a member and vice-Secretary of the Section of Letters of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences as well as a member of the Scientific Council. She also integrates the Scientific Advisory Board of Institute for Urban and Regional Research, Austrian, Academy of Sciences and the Braziliam Observatory of Migration. Prof. Fonseca is a founder member of the IMISCOE research network (International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion in Europe) and a member of the Board of Directors, since its inception in 2004. She is a member of the International Steering Committee of Metropolis International, since 2000, and of the Commission on Global Change and Human Mobility (Globility), a study group of the International Geographical Union. Professor Fonseca is the national expert for the MIPEX – Migrant Integration Policy Index since its inception. She coordinated the IGOT team of the Marie Curie Initial Training Network (INTEGRIM – 2013-2016, funded under EU FP7) on international migration and integration, being also the coordinator of the research dimension on Urban Integration, Residential Patterns and Mobility. She has published extensively in Portugal and abroad, especially on internal and international migration, integration, diversity and urban change; Demographic change and local and regional development. Prof. Fonseca has served on numerous management and leadership positions at the University of Lisbon, namely the following: Board Member of CEG (Centre of Geographical Studies (1984-1986), Board Member of the Faculty of Letters (1991-93), Pro-Rector (1998-2002), Member of the General Council of the University (2010-2013), Dean and President of the Scientific Council of Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (2013-2019).

Matilde Moreira-Santos has expertise in the scientific area Biological Sciences, sub-areas Ecology and Biodiversity and Environmental Sciences, and specialization in Ecotoxicology, with emphasis on the reduction of uncertainties in extrapolations (e.g. from lab to field) inherent in prospective and retrospective Ecological Risk Assessment, specifically on exposure pathways and the effects of anthropogenic stressors (e.g. pesticides) and natural abiotic factors (due to global climate change, e.g. salinization), across levels of biological organization, freshwater and coastal areas and geographical regions. This path, strongly aligned with the global commitment to sustainability (particularly with UN SDGs 6, 14, 15) and at national/regional level with the Research and Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialization (particularly axis 4: Natural Resources and Environment, in the topic Water and Environment), led her to acquire expertise in: (1) development and validation of standardized, ecologically relevant tests with organisms representing the main taxonomic (bacteria, microalgae, macrophytes, crustaceans, insects, amphibians, small fish) and functional groups and environmental compartments (pelagic, benthic); (2) contaminants as habitat disruptors with effects on the spatial distribution of aquatic organisms thus on ecosystems structure/function; (3) impacts of contaminants through the use of outdoor model ecosystems (mesocosms) and the integration of the consequences of soil contamination (through leaching, runoff); (4) tropical ecotoxicology; (5) provision of sound scientific knowledge to support the decision-making processes in the policy and management of aquatic systems; (6) network of national/international collaborations reflected in the co-supervision of students and funding of scientific projects; (7) teaching/supervision of national/international undergraduate/MSc/PhD/pos-graduate courses.

I was born in Lisbon in 1977, and I am a geographer with a degree in Geography and Regional Planning from the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences at the University Nova of Lisbon (2001), and a Ph.D. in spatial planning from the University Nova of Lisbon and Paris IV-Sorbonne (2007). In 2016, I became an assistant professor at the University of Porto in the department of Geography, and later, in 2018, at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (IGOT) of the University of Lisbon. I teach in several courses of IGOT, including the GIS Master’s, the Urbanism and Spatial Planning Master’s, the undergraduate course in Spatial Planning and Management, and the Ph.D. program in Sustainability: Resources, Food, and Society. Besides, I am a researcher at the Center of Geographical Studies of IGOT within the Modelling and Territorial Planning (MOPT) research group, and at the Laboratory Terra. My research interests are reflected in the terms frequently found in my scientific publications, such as urban agriculture, food systems, participatory GIS, metropolitan regions, land use/cover changes, spatial planning, urban growth, geographic information systems, spatial analysis and modelling with AI (machine learning).

Paula Faustino is a Researcher at the National Institute of Health Dr. Ricardo Jorge, Department of Human Genetics, since 2000, where she is the head of the R&D group_Hemoglobinopathies, Iron metabolism and Iron related pathologies. She is also an effective member of the FCT R&D_Unit ISAMB, Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon, since 2014. She holds a PhD in Biology (NOVA University of Lisbon, 1998) and a Pharmaceutical Sciences degree (Pharma D; University of Lisbon, 1987). She has been working in Health and Biological Sciences, mainly in the field of molecular pathology and epidemiology of hemoglobinopathies (thalassemias and hemoglobin variants. e.g. sickle cell anemia, SCA). She has studied, both at genomic and functional levels, novel genetic alterations associated with disorders of hemoglobin in the Portuguese population. In addition, she investigated the mechanisms involved in the long-range control of globin gene expression and hemoglobin switching regulation. Currently, she is studying the genetic modulators of SCA sub-phenotypes (cerebral vasculopathies; vaso-oclusive crises severity) and the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms, within Portuguese and Sub-Saharan African populations. She is interested in discovering and validating biomarkers, which are involved or may predict clinical SCA variability and severity. This knowledge may give new insights into preventive and curative personalized medicine therapies for this pathology. Furthermore, through the utilization of the high throughput technologies, such as next-generation sequencing, she has characterized the non-classic Hereditary Hemochromatosis in the Portuguese population and investigated the physiological consequences of novel mutations found in several iron metabolism related genes. As well, she has contributed to the knowledge of the regulatory mechanism of systemic iron homeostasis, and the association between erythropoiesis and iron metabolism regulation. In addition, she has been studying the role of iron in the progression and in therapeutic response of some viral and neurodegenerative disorders (e.g. Hepatitis C; Alzheimer Disease). Until now, she published more than 75 papers in international and national scientific peer-reviewed journals and supervised 29 PhD and MSc thesis. Paulo Morgado is a GIScientist passionate about cities and urban planning. Paulo holds a Degree in Geography and Regional Planning from FCSH-UNL, a MSc in Geographic Information Systems, from IST-UTL, and a PhD in Regional and Urban Planning (Geocomputation) from IGOT-ULisboa. Paulo is currently an Assistant Professor at the institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Lisbon, a researcher at Centre of Geographical Studies (CEG) and a coordinator of GeoModLAB (http://ceg.ulisboa.pt/geomodlab/?lang=en). At the present moment Paulo is actively involved, and with some tasks coordination responsibilities, in an ongoing research project funded over four million euros (¿ 4.055,730,44). Paulo is also a member of the Applied Geography e GIScience and Systems, of Association of American Geographers and Associação Portuguesa de Geógrafos. Paulo was a visiting researcher at Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis of the University College London (CASA-UCL) and a Visiting Scholar at University of Cambridge, Department of Land Economy. His research areas are centered in the field of Theoretical and Quantitative Geography and in a cross-science study on everything related with cities dynamics. More recently, he is focused on Neurocomputing, Smart and Sustainable Cities, Neurourbanism, and cognitive and real-time cities. Paulo supervises several PhD thesis form different PhD courses, and Masters thesis. Paulo has published several articles in international peer-review journals, 4 book chapters and 6 books. He has also received an award for outstanding contribution in reviewing from the Science of the Total Environment journal, Elsevier Amesterdam, Netherlands.

Paulo Navarro-Costa is group leader of the Evolution, Reproduction & Medicine (EvoReproMed) Laboratory of the Lisbon Medical School (Portugal), and program coordinator at the European Molecular Genetics Quality Network (UK). His work is at the interface between basic and clinical reproductive research and has uncovered, among others, an ancient transcriptional program common to animal male germ cells (eLife, 2024), the molecular drivers responsible for the low spermatogenic efficiency of gorillas (eLife, 2024), a new model for transcript sharing in mammalian spermatogenesis (PLOS Biology, 2020), a transcriptional regulator essential for the unpacking of sperm chromosomes after fertilization (EMBO reports, 2018), and an epigenetic mechanism that temporally controls meiotic transcription (Nature Communications, 2016). At the clinical level, he coordinates a yearly external quality assessment program that evaluates the performance of more than 140 genetic diagnosis laboratories across the globe, as well as being responsible for the European Academy of Andrology best practice guidelines on the genetic testing of male infertility (Andrology, 2023). He is member of the Editorial Board of the official journal of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (USA), and Invited Assistant Professor at the Lisbon Medical School. He serves as referee for international funding agencies and scientific journals, and regularly contributes to scientific outreach activities. Paulo has 18 publications (10 as corresponding author), an average of 41 citations per publication, and 2 kids (data: Google Scholar and his wife).

Paulo Rocha is an Associate Professor in Bioelectronics, ERC Starting Grant Laureate (2020), Distinguished young research leader by the World Cultural Council (WCC 2022) and a Group Leader of the Bioelectronics & Bioenergy Research Lab at CFE – Centre for Functional Ecology, Department of Life Sciences of the University of Coimbra. He is currently an Editorial Board Member for world leading multidisciplinary journals such as Scientific Reports from the publisher Nature and iScience from Cell Press. In 2014, he obtained his PhD in Electrical Engineering with the highest honours (Cum Laude) with a science scholarship from the Dutch Polymer Institute (DPI) in The Netherlands, and in close collaboration with Philips research. As a PhD researcher, he started developing the science of biocompatible materials, circuits and their interaction with living organisms. In 2014, he started his post-doctoral research in the field of Bioelectronics at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer (MPIP) research in Mainz, Germany. In 2016, Paulo joined the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University of Bath (UBath) as an Assistant Professor, been appointed as the Departmental Research Staff Coordinator and have started his independent research group, (with an exceptional team of students and collaborators) and a state-of-the-art low noise characterisation laboratory, specifically designed for bioelectric and bioenergy applications. Paulo’s passion for unconventional approaches and blue sky research ideas have been funded and supported by highly competitive and world leading research industries as well as national and international funding agencies, amassing over 3 million euros.

Raquel Varela is an associate professor with tenure at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Autonomous Section for Education and General Training). She is a historian and researcher. She serves as president of the Observatory on Living and Working Conditions. She is also the coordinator of Social Data/Nova Sustainability. She is a full-time researcher with the History, Territory, and Communities Research Group at CEF/UC/FCSH. She is a member of Laboratório Terra (focusing on Socio-ecological Systems, Planning and Policies, Society, and Environmental Health). She is a collaborating researcher at the Center for Global Studies at Universidade Aberta. She is an honorary fellow at the International Institute for Social History (Amsterdam).

In February 2021, she took her Aggregation Exams in the field of History, specializing in Contemporary History, at FCSH/Universidade Nova de Lisboa (passed unanimously). In 2020, she received the Award from the Ibero-American Communication Association at the University of Oviedo, Spain, for her contribution to the global history of labor and social movements. In 2020, she was the first recipient of the Simone Veil research fellowship, Project Europe-University of Munich. In 2021, she was a visiting fellow at the Institute for European Global Studies at the University of Basel, Switzerland. From 2011 to 2021, she served as Group Leader (Global History of Labor and Social Conflicts) at FCSH-UNL. In 2013 and 2020, she received the Santander Prize for the Internationalization of Scientific Production (UNL). She served as coordinator (2011–2020) of the international project *In The Same Boat? Shipbuilding Industry and Global Labour History*, based at the ISSH in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Author and editor of dozens of books on the contemporary history of Portugal and Europe, global labor studies, the welfare state, the labor movement, and global history. Several of these books have been translated into German, French, and English. She has published dozens of articles in peer-reviewed journals in the fields of history, sociology, education, economics, social work, and political science, indexed in ISI Thompson, CAPES Qualis A, Scopus, among others.

She has coordinated several national and international projects.

She supervises various postdoctoral, doctoral, master’s, and teaching master’s programs, as well as sandwich scholarships.

She is a member of the editorial board of the academic journals *Workers of the World* (IASSC) and deputy editor of the journal *Critique. Journal of Socialist Theory* (University of Glasgow, Scopus 4). She is the founder of the Global Labor Studies Network (New Delhi, India). She is a member of the executive board of the International Association for Strikes and Social Conflicts. Raquel Varela has been a commentator on the public television channel RTP 3 for 10 years, has participated in radio programs, and writes regularly for newspapers.

She served as scientific director for the official celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of the April 25 Revolution (2014). She curated the exhibition “When We Change a Country, It Changes Us Along With It,” marking the 45th anniversary of the April 25 Revolution, in 2019. Raquel Varela is one of the country’s leading science communicators and, from 2018 to 2021, was in charge of the public history program Conversas com História at the Belém Cultural Center; she co-authored the documentary De Pé Sobre a História (5 episodes, RTP2).

I am a coordinating researcher at INIAV I. P. Instituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária e Veterinária, The Portuguese National Institute for Agricultural and Veterinary Research, PhD in Plant Biotechnology from Science Faculty, University of Lisbon, Head of Plant Biotechnology Laboratory of Forest Research Unit. My research interests are focused on Forest Genetics, Molecular Biology and Genomics of Woody Species, including Castanea sativa Mill, Quercus suber L, Pinus pinea L and P. pinaster Ait. The work developed in recent years has focused on the use of molecular markers to assess the genetic structure of populations of chestnut, maritime and stone pines and the use of genomic tools to understanding the genetics underlying various aspects of the Trees¿ Biology that condition, namely: the quality of wood in pine, yield and quality of cork in cork oak and disease resistance in chestnut and maritime pine, namely chestnut root rot, caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi and pine wilt disease caused by the pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus. Currently I am the coordinator of the research program: “Understanding disease resistance to Phytophthora cinnamomi in Castanea spp”. I was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Clemson University, University of Kentucky and Southern Institute of Forest Genetics – USA in the academic year of 2015-2016. Currently I am the scientific coordinator of The Chestnut Breeding Program at INIAV and of the reserach program “Understanding resistance of Castanea spp to Phtytophthora cinnamomi Rands”.

Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Environmental Health, School of Medicine, University of Lisbon, and at TERRA – Associate Laboratory for Sustainable Land Use and Ecosystem Services. She is a Landscape Architect (University of Évora, 1994) with over 30 years of scientific and professional experience. The first decade of her career was devoted to professional practice and consultancy, primarily in land-use planning, sustainable development, nature conservation, protected areas, and cultural landscape management. Between 2000 and 2008, she participated in national and international research projects as a Research Assistant at the University of Évora, where she completed an European PhD in Arts and Techniques of Landscape (2008). Her doctoral thesis, “Integrative Landscape Management: New Parameters for the Implementation of the Common Agricultural Policy. A Case Study in Southern Portugal”, was developed across five European universities (Nottingham, Paris, Arlon, Wageningen, and Copenhagen), fostering a transdisciplinary approach integrating natural and social sciences. From 2010 to 2015, she served as a Guest Professor at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, Universidade Nova de Lisboa. In 2015, she initiated a research collaboration with the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ICS-ULisboa). Throughout her postdoctoral trajectory, she has combined research and teaching across six universities, having taught 18 courses, supervised 16 postgraduate students, and currently supervising six PhD theses. She has authored approximately 100 scientific and technical publications. Since 2020, she has contributed to the design and implementation of four Horizon projects in the fields of nature-based solutions, water-smart management, sustainability transitions, and food systems planning. Her research is grounded in action research and solution-oriented approaches, aiming to contribute to innovative knowledge production in the field of planetary health. Her work integrates natural and social sciences at the environment–health interface and is underpinned by participatory and collaborative research processes. Her current research focuses on two main lines: food systems transitions and nature-based prescribing, framed within the context of the climate emergency and biodiversity loss. These research lines promote transformative processes that integrate scientific knowledge, public policy, and active governance, with positive impacts on human health and well-being, the economy, and landscapes as living systems. She has participated in several public policy design and implementation processes as a consultant to public administrations, including the National Architecture and Landscape Policy (2015) and the National Programme for Spatial Planning Policy (2019). She is co-founder and co-coordinator of FoodLink – the Food Transition Network of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (2019–present) and coordinator of the Food Transition Strategy for the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (2025). As both a researcher and a citizen, she considers creativity an essential driver of scientific innovation and knowledge production, supporting healthier and more equitable societal transformations. Her research has been recognised with awards from Universidade Nova de Lisboa (2014) and ICS-ULisboa (2022).

Rossana Estanqueiro is a Geographer. Graduated in Geography and Regional Planning (2002), Master in Territorial Management (2007) and PhD in Geography and Territorial Planning, specialization area in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (2012). Researcher integrated in History, Territories and Communities NOVA FCSH Hub of CFE – CENTRE FOR FUNCTIONAL ECOLOGY – Science for People & the Planet of Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (since March 2022) & Laboratory TERRA. Between 2015 and 2022 was researcher integrated in CICS.NOVA (Interdisciplinary Centre for Social Sciences of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa). Between 2016 and 2020 was Coordinator of the Research Team (RT): Geographic Modelling, Remote Sensing and Data Infrastructures, integrated in Research Group(RG4): Socio-Spatial Modelling and Planning of the CICS.NOVA, and also representative member of the RG4 in the dynamic committee of the CICS.NOVA Ideas Laboratory. Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography and Regional Planning (DGPR) of NOVA FCSH, where since 2012 she teaches aggregate subjects in the area of geographic analysis, Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems for territorial and urban planning, and between 2017 and 2023 was the Departmental Mobility Coordinator (ERASMUS +) of the DGPR (NOVA FCSH). In 2023 and 2024 was the Coordinator of Geography and Regional Planning Undergraduate (DGPR, NOVA FCSH) and member of the Department’s executive committee.

His research team has been pursuing several approaches aiming mainly at: (i) reducing uncertainties in Ecological Risk Assessments of contaminated sites, particularly in the tropics; (ii) evaluating microevolution due to pollution in both soil and aquatic populations and studying inheritance of resistance to metals; (iii) developing both laboratory and in situ ecologically relevant short-term sublethal toxicity assays, representing different functions in freshwater and estuarine ecosystems; (iv) appraising contaminant-driven emigration/recolonisation (repellence versus attractiveness) and contaminant-caused habitat-fragmentation: contaminants as habitat disturbers alongside as physiological toxicants.

Sean Cronin (Reggio di Calabria, 1994) é licenciado em Comunicação e Sociedade, tendo desenvolvido uma dissertação que analisa a série televisiva Black Mirror e a sua relação com o nosso uso da tecnologia. É também mestre em Comunicação Empresarial (ensinado em inglês) pela Universidade de Milão, onde a sua investigação se centrou na teoria e práticas do capitalismo de vigilância. Participou no programa Erasmus+ na De Montfort University (Leicester, Reino Unido) e no ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (Portugal). É cofundador do ateliê de design Quattro Mura e da revista online de música Recovery Magazine. Desde 2010, tem trabalhado como compositor para vários artistas, incluindo Ainé e Hesanobody. É autor do livro bilingue de poesia italiano-português “22 poemas e meio que nunca escrevi”.

Sónia Rebocho is an Integrated Researcher at História, Território e Comunidades (HTC), a branch of the CFE – Centre for Functional Ecology – Science for People and the Planet (UC) – at NOVA FCSH. She holds a degree in Social Policy (ISCSP-UTL, 1997), completed her Master’s degree in Cultural and Political History at FCSH-UNL in 2007 and is currently pursuing a PhD in Contemporary History at the same faculty. Her research has focused on the history of Portuguese Republicanism and the First Republic.
