CFE/TERRA researcher Ivan Viegas participates in the International Conference “Sustainable Fisheries & Future Blue Food in the North Atlantic”

Sustainable fisheries and blue food in the North Atlantic were the focus of the “Sustainable Fisheries & Future Blue Food” conference, with the contribution of researcher Ivan Viegas (CFE/TERRA) who emphasised the potential of food by-products for more sustainable aquaculture.

With the aim of discussing sustainable fishing, on 4 and 5 December the National Committee for Ocean Decade, in partnership with the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research (IMR), the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), DOCAPESCA, and the Portuguese Committee for the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (CP-COI), organised the international conference “Sustainable Fisheries & Future Blue Food in the North Atlantic”.

The conference took place in the Auditorium of the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), in Algés, and brought together the scientific community, government bodies, NGOs and the fishing and fish processing industry to discuss the vision of sustainable fishing, aquaculture and blue food in the North Atlantic.

Ivan Viegas, a researcher at the Centre for Functional Ecology (CFE) and TERRA Associate Laboratory, contributed to this discussion by presenting the lecture “Feed-Fish-Food: A triangle for circular approaches in aquaculture”, at a round table dedicated to the theme of Sustainable Aquaculture. Ivan Viegas addressed the problem of using fish stocks to make aquaculture feed, and also emphasised the importance of using by-products from the food industry to complement the range of ingredients available for formulating high-yield, nutritious, balanced and sustainable feed.
