1º Congresso Nacional de Saúde e Ambiente

1st National Congress on Health and Environment features TERRA members

On February 7 and 8, 2025, the 1st National Congress on Health and Environment – For a Healthy and Sustainable Future was held at Culturgest, in Lisbon. The event was organized by the Portuguese Council for Health and Environment (CPSA).

The congress gathered more than 130 speakers and approximately 700 participants from diverse professional fields, including doctors, nurses, nutritionists, pharmacists, psychologists, engineers, and researchers, to discuss the interconnectedness between health and the environment, aiming to promote a healthier and more sustainable future.

The opening session featured the Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins, who emphasized the importance of aligning health and environmental policies to address current challenges.

The TERRA Associate Laboratory had a significant presence at the congress, with several of its members actively contributing. Notable speakers included Margarida Moldão from LEAF, António Vaz Carneiro, Paulo Nicola, Paulo Nogueira, Hugo Costa Osório, and Ricardo Reis Santos from ISAMB. Researcher Paulo Nicola from ISAMB was part of the organizing committee, while Professors Teresa Ferreira from CEF and Isabel Sousa from LEAF served on the scientific committee.

Professor Teresa Ferreira, President of the TERRA Associate Laboratory’s Coordinators Council, highlighted the congress’s importance:

“The magnitude of the changes caused by humanity is extraordinary. The diverse pressures we exert have already had a global impact, directly affecting human health. These interactions are vast, profound, and often difficult to reverse on our planet.

This is exactly the focus of the National Congress on Health and Environment: to analyze the scale and effects of environmental changes on health, while also discussing how the health sector can contribute to mitigating them.

A challenge, a necessity, a mission. That is why researchers from TERRA, dedicated to studying these interactions and finding solutions, are at the heart of the debate. With knowledge and commitment, they help understand risks and outline paths for a more sustainable and healthy future.”

The congress addressed topics such as the impact of climate change on health, environmental sustainability in the healthcare sector, and the promotion of good practices in the circular economy. International experts, such as Marina Romanello from the Lancet Countdown Commission and María Neira from the World Health Organization, shared experiences and strategies to reduce the environmental impact in healthcare.

At the closing session, Luís Campos, president of the CPSA, highlighted that the climate crisis is the biggest challenge the world faces, stressing the importance of collective collaboration to promote the necessary changes for the well-being of future generations.

The 1st National Congress on Health and Environment marked a significant step in integrating health and environmental policies in Portugal, emphasizing the importance of a joint approach to address current global challenges.
